Did you know that if you don’t keep up your grades you cannot act professionally. I am not saying this to scare you…it is the law! To work as a minor you must have a current work permit and in order to obtain a work permit, you must have a C average or above.
Recently, I had a student that learned this lesson the hard way. He was up for an amazing break out role. When casting called to put him on hold, the first thing mom did was check to make sure his work permit was current. The job was suppose to start working the next day! As it turns out, his permit had expired 2 days prior. Mom rushed over the school to get the work permit application signed off. Well, it turns out, her son was failing two classes! This came as total shock since this boy is a pretty good student. So this meant he now had a D average which meant NO WORK PERMIT! Casting called and, of course, he booked the role.
Mom did the right thing and had the boy personally call his agent and explain that he would not be able to take the part. This turned out to be a huge dissapointment, not only to him, but to his parents, agent, casting director, director and the producers
Word of advice…study hard! Education comes first! If you are having a hard time at school, talk to your parents and get help! Keep in mind that you only need a C average to get a work permit but your grades should actually be higher than that to be able to miss school for jobs and not get behind.
