When an actor gets cast in a television show or a film it is common to be called to do a table read. At a table read you literally sit at a big table with the cast and read the script out loud. The reason for this is the director, producers, and writers like to hear the script out loud to make sure all of the material is working. This is a chance for them to hear project come to life and get a feel for the pace and overall energy. One important note to keep in mind-just because the actors are not physically acting out the scenes does not mean they should give a flat reading. I have heard of people getting fired after the table readdue to lack of chemistry. Don’t let it worry you, your child was already hired at this point so its no more pressure than showing up on set and being prepared. Just be sure to be prepared so that your child clearly understands her character. I have found some actor to treat this process very casually. They will say “oh it’s just a table read”. I think this is an attitude that is adopted when an actor has been through this process before because yes it can be a very light and casual environment. But just because it is easy for some doesn’t mean it’s easy for everyone. I have done table reads with big stars and they may not have done their work because it is their TV show or they are the star of the film so they don’t feel they have anything to lose. They already live their character and know the what producers are looking for. Until you are in their position do not adopt their attitude. They to were once “just starting out” and had to work hard to get where they are. Good Luck and enjoy the process. Olivia
