As an acting coach I have a good understanding of how challenging it is to get close to a part and not get it. Acting can be very challenging in that way. My advice is go to every audition to enjoy acting without focusing on getting the part.
I want to share with you a story of how I ended up booking a Guest Starring role on “Seventh Heaven”. I was so excited when I got the audition for the show because I had been watching it since I was little. Plus that’s where Jessica Biel got her big break! My audition was to play a girl that was going on a date with, series-regular, Simon Camdon played by David Gallagher.
I went in to read for the role and it felt so natural to me! It was one of those auditions that you just jive with. It was my first time meeting the casting director and it went fantastic! I walked out of that room so confident! I just knew I would get a callback! Sure enough, I went back into producers the next day. Wow! I felt even better at the callback than I did the first call. The producers asked me a ton of questions and made me feel amazing!
It is so hard to play the waiting game when it comes to auditioning. You try your best to let go of it when you leave the room but even so, it still lingers somewhere in the back of your head. Did I get it? Hmmm!Would I have heard by now? Have they started shooting yet? Am I still in the running? As the days pass with no word, you try to forget about it yet there’s this feeling of disappointment that sets in. You finally realize it’s been too long. You definitely would have heard by now. It’s not only disappointment but it’s confusion. You start questioning yourself and think “gosh, I just don’t get it… I know they liked me”. Trust me…if you feel they liked you, I’m sure they did!
A week later, I got a call from my manager. Every time that phone rang the past week and it was them I would secretly get excited thinking “oh yay, this might be the call with good news”. This time I knew it was too late. Politely they tell me that I did not get the part and explain to me the reason…long silence…the reason was “they wrote another part for you!!!” OMG! I couldn’t believe it, not only did I get a part, I got an even better one! I got to play Simon Camdon’s girlfriend! The other character was just going on a date with him! I passed all that and went straight to girlfriend status! I had the best time shooting this episode!
It just really goes to show that it is about doing your best, trusting the process, and making fans!
