Woohoo!!! My daughter booked her first film!!! What? It doesn’t pay??? Yes, sometimes that is the case.
When a child is starting out in the business, it is wise to expose them to the various facets of the industry. Aside from taking acting classes, kids can get their training by working on Student Films, Short Films, Plays, Director’s Reels and so much more. And that’s right…many of these do not pay. If you and your child can afford the time…then go for it! Kids gain valuable experience auditioning, following direction, getting comfortable in front of the camera, working with other actors plus these credits build their resume.
When I first moved to LA, I worked on a UCLA Student Film. I remember so well when I got that “page” with the director’s number. I rushed home to call him back and practically hit the ceiling when he said those magic words “we want to cast you in our film”. I was hired to play the best friend of a girl who was running away from home. I was the goodie goodie one who told on her and she later beat up. Hee Hee! We shot the film in two weekends and I had an incredible time. They paid for my meals and gave me a copy of the film when they finally finished it…three years later! It took a long time but it didn’t matter cuz it was my first job and I loved it.
There is such a mix bag of these projects. Some never make it to print while others end up at film festivals all over the world. You just never know in this business. If the opportunity presents itself and you have the time and it doesn’t conflict with auditions, then go for it. Just be sure you are comfortable with the material and feel confident enough with the people wanting to hire your child. It is completely your call. If you have an agent or manager, let them know you are going to be working on these projects. They will let you know if there is a problem with the scheduling. And do keep in mind that your agents are very busy seeking paying jobs for your child so don’t expect them to get too involved in these projects. You are on your own with these. Good Luck.  Lorena
