In any script you read, you will undoubtedly come across the phrase, or action, “beat”… Most commonly put at the middle of a conversation or monologue, “beat” can most easily be described as a “pause”, or a “break”. Just the single the word “beat” can mean several things - a thoughtful break, a change in thought or even an awkward moment between two characters. It is the job of the actor to fill that space creatively.
The “beat” or “beats” of a given screenplay are developed and constructed in an effort to keep the story moving foward, to maintain momentum. The appropriate way to convey these “beats” or actions are constitued by what’s happening in-the-moment of any given story. An actor has to choose how his or her “beat” effects the character in the current situation.
On the show “E.R.” for example, it may look something like this:
INT. HOSPITAL - NIGHT
DR. ROSS enters the waiting room. The PATIENT’S FAMILY MEMBER sits on a chair waiting for some news.
DR. ROSS
We’re unsure if your brother’s gonna make it.
At this this time, there’s isn’t any telling. But, there’s
another patient that could needs his heart. What do
you want to do?
BEAT.
FAMILY MEMBER
(BEAT) I’m not sure.
DR. ROSS
You could save a woman’s life.
BEAT.
FAMILY MEMBER
(BEAT) Give her his heart.
As the family member, you have a decision to make - do you try to save your brother? Or save a woman’s life? In this case, the PLOT and dialogue have made the choice for you. The answer to how to read a certain beat will commonly be found by playing close attention to the scene and dialogue.
Also keep in mind “beats” will not always be noted for you, as an actor you will have to decipher them for yourself at times, based on the circumstances your character is dealt. A good way to prepare for this, is to pay close attention to the way you speak in your everyday life. Do you pause when you receive bad news or good news? Are you quiet when making a decision? Or do you sometimes get lost in your own thought? Just remember it’s the moments in between the actual lines that can be the most powerful! Olivia
