Ha! That’s a funny question. I actually advise that you don’t crash auditions. I have to admit that this is my advice now that I have been around the block a few times. If you had asked me that question 7 years ago, I may have advised you to give it shot.
Crashing an audition means to show up to an audition that you are not scheduled for and sign in as if you were scheduled. This can work if you are lucky but really backfire if you are caught. I would never advise anyone to try to “crash” Tv and Film auditions since casting directors schedule much fewer actors plus casting directors have given lots of thought to who they have decided to give appointments to. In the past it was a bit easier to crash commercial auditions since the list of scheduled actors was not computerized but now that it is, I wouldn’t advise it. You want to make fans of casting directors not enemies with them.
If you have heard of a great audition that a friend is going in on and you have not been scheduled for, my advice is to give your agent a call and ask about it. You can do this, just don’t do it daily. Keep in mind that what you think you are right for others may not agree so you have to be cautious.
Now if you are at a commercial audition and happen to see that there is another audition right next door that you could also be right for, the best thing to do is kindly ask the session runner “if by chance you could audition if they have the space and if you are right for the role”. If they say no, just say thanks.
Here’s a story just to give you an idea of what could happen-
My good friend “crashed” a commercial audition once cuz she saw the girls auditioning looked just like her-pretty with dark hair and in their mid 20s. Once she got inside, she found out that the girls had to say their lines in French. Not good.
Keep your eyes open for all opportunities but do your best to follow the right channels. It’s just safer that way. Lorena
